January is National Birth Defects Prevention Month

Greetings OTIS Colleagues,
January is National Birth Defects Prevention Month, and this year's theme, "And the Beat Goes On … Looking to the Future for Health Hearts," focuses on prevention and promoting awareness of congenital heart defects. As usual, the National Birth Defects Prevention Network (NBDPN) has created a packet of patient and provider education materials that are available for free download here: http://www.nbdpn.org/bdpm2012.php.
One of the PDF's available for download is a fact sheet: "Maternal Steps to Help Prevent Heart Defects." This fact sheet reviews some of the common maternal risk factors for congenital heart defects, with links to further resources. I am pleased to announce that the OTIS toll-free number is included as the resource for more information about medications during pregnancy.
I encourage you to share the packet materials with your patients and colleagues!
Best wishes,
